Frostgrave: Dark Alchemy!

Greetings all.

First up, apologies for the massive delay in posting! It's been a fair while since I've had the chance to paint, let alone take pictures and write about it. I got married a couple weeks ago, and so the preceeding few weeks were ALL wedding ALL the time! We had a fantastic day though, so it was all worth it in the end:

Now that the wedding is over, and I'm back to reality, I've managed to squeeze in a little geek time! I've done a little painting that I'll take some pics of over the next few days, but firstly a mini battle report!

So my Brother-in-Lead Alex and I have been playing through the (excellent) Dark Alchemy campaign for Frostgrave. It's been a rather nice change of pace for us actually, since it's played cooperatively. So it came to pass that our respective wizards made an uneasy alliance, and advanced into an abandoned alchemical factory to discover the secrets (and horrors) within.

We bashed through the first couple scenarios in one evening, but sadly didn't take any pictures (between lack of time and fading light, it just wasn't possible). I did however manage to take a few snaps of the final scenario, The Spreading Flames.

By this point in the campaign, our brave wizards have dispatched the foul Alchemical Monstrosity that made its home in the ruins of the factory, as well as outrun the shambling hordes of burning skeletons blocking their path. We're now in what remains of the main factory floor, looking to grab what loot we can and get out before the vats of volatile chemicals ignite and bring our adventuring careers to a swift end. Unfortunately, this section of the factory is where the semi-sentient war machines known as Fire Flingers were produced, and they're not about to let us escape so easily.

The scenario calls for some medium sized fire-flinging constructs, so Alex's Tick Tock Men stepped up to the plate. He also made some rather excellent fire markers that you can see in the pictures below.

Our warbands each took a flank and advanced cautiously. Alex's wizard had been badly wounded by a sneaky skeleton in the previous scenario, so he took some time to heal up before advancing further. My plan was to go straight for the nearest treasure and dispatch its clockwork guardian swiftly. This didn't quite go to plan however, and one of my treasure hunters was doused in chemical flames before the monstrosity fell. Fortunately for me, the (now somewhat crispy) treasure hunter survived to make off with the shinies. Alex had managed to secure a couple of treasures on his side, whilst also destroying a Tick Tock man.

We both continued to move through the flaming warehouse with our wizards, using Elemental Bolts and Bone Darts to down the remaining two Tick Tock men, nabbing treasure as we did so.

It was at this point that we decided we should make the game a little more interesting. All the constructs had been destroyed, so it was just a matter of gathering up the treasure and getting out in time, which didn't make for much of a challenge. So we decided another two guardians would enter through the doorway to attack our warbands.

Unfortunately, both of the Tick Tock men advanced on Alex's wizard, preventing him from grabbing some loot, and forcing him to make a fighting withdrawal.

This situation worked to my advantage though, and Scabrous Vile was left to pluck some treasure from the flames and make off with it before the warehouse came down around him.

What a campaign! I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a trip to the frozen city, particularly as the co-op nature of it is a nice change of pace from the usual.

We'll be cracking on with the Thaw of the Lich Lord next, and it's going to be a little odd going back to trying to kill each other!

Long overdue post: A Rogue Trader skirmish!

Greetings all.

I had intended to post this aaaages ago, but real life has a habit of getting in the way, and that's just what happened!

About a month ago, my good buddy Alex (go to his blog, do it now!) and I had a little RT skirmish. We pitched his salvage crew against my beastmen, and let battle commence. We went with a simple premise: Alex's lads were attempting to retrieve some technical data from a panel in the centre of the board, while my beastmen were attempting to prevent them doing so by sabotaging the panel. Sounds straightforward enough. However, to make things a little more interesting, the panel was in the middle of an inhabited area, populated with civilians that would get in the way of the action. Oh yeh and there was a certain clockwork guardian protecting the panel: the fabled Tick-Tock man!

Since its been so long, I can't really remember the details of the battle... So I'm afraid you'll have to make do with as many pictures as I can muster...

The stage is set
Beastmen advance cagily
Salvage agents do the same
The mysterious Tick-Tock Man stands inert
Salvage agents continue their careful advance

Seems like a good time to spread the Imperial Truth

The water seller goes about his business, apparently unaware of the carnage about to unfold around him...

Beastmen advance behind their human shields, the archaeologist and his short companion

The priests decide that Raqquill and Knossos would benefit from a dose of the Imperial Truth

Moments later, fearless battlefield reporter Rhonda Burgundy stops Knossos for comment. Raqquill is feeling a little camera shy and does a runner...

Meanwhile, the salvage crew take cover in the relative safety of some obviously explosive barrels.

Beastmen aren't a patient sort... Gug makes a break for the control panel, awakening the Tick-Tock Man. Whoops. This immediately results in a nasty case of flamer to the face.

The cameraman catches a stray bullet from a salvage agent across the board...

An angry mob assemble to deliver some vigilante justice to the shooter.

After trading shots, the beastmen and salvage crew decide to settle things with fisticuffs. An inebriated citizen also wanders into the melee, swinging wildly at anyone who gets in the way.

Knossos takes a dirtnap.

A displacer field transports a salvage agent out of the melee, and into the domain of the Tick-Tock Man...

...who doesn't like unwanted visitors.

Quality Imperial tech saves the day once more...

...but the Tick-Tock Man is relentless.

Cue epic boss battle.

The Imperial agent is teleported to safety, and treats Raqquill to a glowing ball of plasma.

After multiple turns of achieving nothing more than quite a loud noise, Moloch unleashes a torrent of heavy bolter shells into the Tick-Tock Man.

The Tick-Tock Man finally falls to plasma fire from the remaining salvage agents.

Gaxt seizes the opportunity to sabotage the console, before being riddled with bullets by the remaining crew.

Hope you enjoyed it fellas! I suppose you could call it a victory for the beastie boys, but it came at quite the cost...

Sabotage at the Sump...

Greetings all.

Well, it's been roughly a bajillion years since I last posted anything, and for that I offer my humblest apologies! Hopefully this post will make it up to you though...

So a short while ago, my good buddy Alex roped me into a game of Rogue Trader (by which I mean, he asked me once and I was immediately all over the idea). Last Monday, we made this happen.

Before I start, Alex has already done a little write up of our battle, which I highly recommend you check out.

As this was to be my first ever game of RT, and Alex's first game in many years, we decided to keep things fairly small and simple. We each picked a handful of models, and got cracking.

The premise for our little scenario is that my cultists are attempting to poison the water supply (actually a chemical processing plant in our case), spreading chaos and disorder among the residents, while Alex's company of pirates have been charged with protecting it. This wont be a full report as such, but more a series of action shots from our game, and a few words to go with them. Hope you enjoy.

The stage is set...

My cultists started advancing towards the processing plant, while four shifty looking pirates stood guard. As this was my first game, we weren't exactly familiar with the rules for hiding at this point, so the cult advanced with little care for their own safety...

Seeing the blood-crazed cultists hot-footing it towards them, the pirates call for reinforcements. Unfortunately for the cult, the pirates also prove to be crack shots, even at extreme range, and drop several of their number on the way in.

Feeling the heat, the cult decide it may be time to prolong their lives by hugging cover. My cult leader takes position behind a barricade and returns fire (after spending several turns trying to get his shotgun to work). Combined fire from the cult leader and his accompanying mooks manage to drop both the guards at the top of the tower.

The rest of the cult advance towards the objective, under heavy fire from the better trained and better armed pirates. Several of their number fall to autogun fire, offering their lives to the Blood God, and one of the pirates with them.

The scene of carnage catches the attention of Khorne, and he blesses his faithful with a bloodthirsty servant to aid them. The pirate boss and his crew seem to be made of sterner stuff however, and send the daemon back to hell.

The appearance of the daemon managed to buy time for the cult to advance. Butting a pirate into submission on the way, the beastman makes it to the control panel. After much head-scratching and control panel-bashing, the deed is done and the machine is sabotaged. To add insult to injury, the plucky beastman manages to shoot the Ogryn pirate in the face before the cult retreats.

Well that was mighty fun! I didn't really know what to expect from this game to be quite honest, but what a blast! We spent quite a lot of time flicking back and forth through the big book, and we did wing it a few times, but we were so involved in the story that was unfolding that it didn't detract from the fun.

I've been pretty well sucked into the whole RT shenanigans now, to the point where I'm already planning out a little RT-specific warband (though you'll have to wait for that)...

Hope you enjoyed the run down, comments are welcome!
