Realm of Warcry... Completed it, mate.

 Greetings all.

Just a quick one to bring this project up to date. I "completed" my Realm of Warcry warband a little while back, and even got a little game in with them. I say they're "completed" because there are a few extra bits that I could add, plus there's always the chance they'll expand, but the main body of the warband that we originally rolled up is all finished.

The most recent addition was these dwarfs. I really wasn't looking forward to these as I couldn't really think of a way to make them Chaotic without looking rubbish and messy. I borrowed some ideas from my pal Alex who had made some before, and inspiration really struck when I found some spare Nurgle helmets in my bits box. As it turned out, they ended up being some of my favourite minis in the warband.

This has been a fun little project and a great creative outlet as well. I may add some more bits and bobs in the future, but for now Slumpscha Swampstrider and his merry band are finished.

Realm of Warcry update

 Greetings all.

As a group, me and the lads have been working away on our Tale of Four Gamers style Realm of Warcry project. Somehow Alex and Steve have both completely finished theirs, with me and Mark lagging behind a bit. Having said that, I have been working on mine a little, and I'm nearly at the point where I've finished all of my initial followers.

My most recent additions are this "Cold One" and his Dark Elf handler:

Got a few annoying Dwarfs to add next, then maybe a few other extras.

Realm of Warcry: Krule and the gang

 Greetings all.

After having so much fun building and painting my champion, I added a couple mates for him to boss around:

Bonus Johann now included to run away from various things.

We also played a cheeky game via zoom the other day, a sort of trial of champions. Great fun too, with lots of twists and turns. We rolled up some additional followers (including more bloody dwarfs for me...) so I'll be adding them to the merry little band shortly.

Realm of Warcry: Part One

 Greetings all.

A somewhat odd post from me today... if any of you follow my good buddy Alex's blog Leadballoony you might have seen his efforts in building a Realm of Chaos/Warcry mashup warband. Essentially rolling up a champion and followers in the hallowed tomes of the Lost and the Damned and Slaves to Darkness, and then translating this to modern minis and rules.

A few weeks ago I suggested to my fellow geeks that we should at some point do a "Tale of Four Gamers" style slow grow project. Everyone immediately jumped on it as a good idea, and Alex suggested that we hop on his Realm of Warcry bandwagon and build warbands on a monthly basis, with the occasional game in between. Given that this is obviously a brilliant idea, that is exactly what we did!

We got together on Zoom to roll up our initial warbands, and either by fate or personal choice we all ended up with Nurgle as our patron. My champion and initial clutch of followers are as below:

  • Orc Champion of Nurgle - Very long legs, Nurgling infestation
  • 2 Orcs
  • 1 Dark Elf
  • 1 Cold One
  • 3 Beastmen
  • 6 Dwarfs
Bit of a mixed bag I think you'll agree! We've allowed ourselves a bit of artistic licence with this whole project, given that the end goal is a bit of fun and creativity, so we'll be rerolling anything that is too silly, and there's a certain amount of interpretation allowed as to what the choices actually refer to (for example, my Cold One may end up being a slightly different beast, but keeping the general theme).

The catch is that all of these minis will be from the "modern" GW range, to save us the headache of hunting down old lead. With that in mind, I present my champion, Slumpsha Swampstrider:

He's built from the incredible new Kruleboyz kit, with a few Nurgly additions and a bit of green stuff to give him those lanky legs. Very pleased with how he came out and I can't wait to see how he performs in his quest for glory.

We captured it for Chaos... a long overdue update

 Greetings all.

Bit of an unexpected update this time. Many moons ago (like seven years or so) I painted up some of the very cool, and not very readily available Chaos Cultists from 2nd Edition 40k, sculpted by Paul Muller. I've got a fair few of these guys, but tbh I wish I had even more because they're some of my favourite models of all time.

I had originally planned for these guys to be part of a Khorne Daemonkin army, but given that I don't really play 40k any more, and Daemonkin dont actually exist any more, they sort of sat unloved for a long time. My first batch were painted up in Khorne colours (i.e. red!) and were mostly unconverted, but these guys were chopped up loads. I decided to paint these up in Undivided colours, given that they weren't planned for inclusion in any particular army or project, and will just turn up as and when I need some deluded mooks (probably in Stargrave more than anything). I also added in an old Redemptionist flamer to give them a bit of firepower, and it fits the aesthetic nicely.

I also updated the basing on my older Khorne cultists to bring them in line with my current minis a bit more (with a sneak peek of some other bits in the background):

Hope you like em!

Accidental Warcry warbands

 Greetings all.

I haven't posted in a while, mostly because I haven't done much in the way of painting. I've been assembling a few bits and bobs, but that's not very exciting to look at. I did paint one thing, which I'll show you below.

What I have done is cobble together two Warcry warbands from models that I already had painted. I haven't actually played much Warcry, but everyone seems to love it, and if the world ever returns to normal I'll give it a bash.

Anyway here's my Nurgle warband:

And my Khorne warband:

I've also got a cool Gorehound model that I'm gonna add to these at a later date for an alternative leader.

Whilst I was messing around with my Bloodletters, I finally decided to convert an icon bearer for them, to bring the unit up to 10. I had a few odd broken bits from the original lot of Bloodletters, so I pinned them together and added a modern Khorne icon:

Till next time.

Back in the saddle

Greetings all,

Been a while again hasn't it? I've just had zero motivation and not much time to do any painting for a long while now. Well I decided to rectify that recently, sort of. In an effort to force myself to do a bit of painting and remember that I actually enjoy it, I picked up something very simple to ease myself back into it.

I've had these Plaguebearers sitting around for a long time now. They're actually my "leftovers" from doing my two big units of 30, and they were in various states of disrepair. Some were missing arms or weapons (or toes in one case...), but with a bit of ingenuity I managed to cobble together two serviceable units of five. At some point these will be useful for summoning in AoS, but for now they just serve as a handy way to get me back to painting.

They're nothing glamorous but they did turn out ok. I mixed in a few more modern bits that I found in my bits box too.

I have to say though, this year hasn't been a total wash in terms of hobby time, as I have played a fair few games of my new favourite game ever: Blood Bowl! I ran my Orcs in a local league, losing most of my games, but winning best painted and generally having a great time. I was intending to paint a new team for next season, but that didn't quite work out. They're still on the table though and I'll get them done for the one after...maybe.

Anyway, that's it from me for now. Hopefully I won't leave it quite as long next time!

First post of 2019: a very special Christmas present!

Greetings all,

It's taken me a while to get into gear in terms of blogging this year, and I'm definitely still in something of a slump hobby-wise. Despite that, I'm trying to push on and motivate myself to get stuff painted, play with it, and write a bit about it.

With that in mind, I thought I should probably do a now long overdue post about a very special Christmas present that I received from my good buddy Alex (from Lead Balloony). He's been working on a secret project recently, and sharpening his sculpting skills. This worked out well for me, as over Christmas he gifted me with a wonderful scratch built Spoilpox Scrivener (a type of Herald of Nurgle). This was more than I could ever have hoped for, especially given that it was his first entirely scratch built miniature. Some pre-painting pics stolen straight from Alex's blog (go there too!):

Needless to say, this lad jumped right to the top of the painting queue immediately. I went for a pretty simple scheme, partly to tie him in with all my other Nurgle troops, and partly because I was so scared of messing it up!

Alex has done a great job of tying him in with his Realm of Chaos mates, whilst also making him imposing enough to stand out. As you can imagine, I was over the moon!

That's it from me. In my efforts to drag my way out of my slump, I've signed up to a (fairly) local Blood Bowl league. Hopefully this will give me a bit of motivation to play and paint a few figs. I've also based all my remaining Familiars, so I can do a bit of work on them now and then. Should be a nice low-pressure project. Finally, Alex has managed to convince me to do a slow grow AoS skirmish campaign with him, in which we each take a force we're unfamiliar with and build it up over the year. It's very low pressure too, so that suits me fine. He's chosen Sylvaneth for me, and I picked Daughters of Khaine for him. Both very cool, and very different, so we'll see where that takes us.

Till next time.

Quick painting update

Greetings all.

I thought I'd write another post real quick, before I run out of steam again and go for another year without posting... I do at least have something to show, although it is very much more of the same.

Work continues on my Nurgle Daemons for AoS/40k. It's been a long time since I played a game, and I should probably rectify that, but I am at least painting my army.

Four more second edition Plaguebearers complete:

This actually means I have a completed unit of 30 of this version, plus 30 of the previous version, and 10 of the following version. Not bad at all really, although I ought to take a group picture at some point.

Till next time.

Well that didn't work out

Greetings all.

So the plan was to do some more blogging. That was fast approaching a year ago, and clearly it didn't happen. So here I am, writing another post about returning to blogging. In truth, I have missed it, and I do feel a bit out of the loop when I'm not blogging, so I'll be making a bit more of an effort to do just that. Although I said that before, so I guess we'll see!

Anyway, I have painted some models and played some games since I last posted. It's been a bit difficult adjusting to the "new normal", having moved house again and trying to raise a small human. Various life things have contributed to me losing my hobby mojo a little. It seems to be on the right track again though, so let's hope that continues.

So here are some pictures of the meagre amount of models I've painted this year...

Some templates for Blood Bowl. The rust effect was a bit of an experiment that wasn't entirely successful, but they're done and it's better than bare plastic.

Ripper Bolgrot

Scrappa Sorehead

Tokens for Blood Bowl

A bunch more Nurgle stuff. Old school Plaguebearers and a very cool Pantheon of Chaos Herald.

Demogorgon!

A couple of Mystic Warriors for Frostgrave

A Frostgrave zombie, made from an old Nurgle champion.

6 monopose beastmen, to fill in as various things in Frostgrave (Rangifers, most recently).

A bit of a pitiful showing so far, but hey ho. I've played a few games along the way too, which is cool. The painting flow is picking up a bit as time goes on, and blogging might help that along.

That's all for now!
