Greetings all.
I've got something slightly different to show you today, and that is my character for the Zoom 40k/Frostgrave mashup RPG we've been playing for the last couple months to get us through lockdown. It's all hosted and masterfully written by my good mate Alex, with me, Steve, and Mark bumbling our way through the adventures, failing to unravel the simplest puzzles, and solving most of our problems with violence. Yup, it's bloody awesome.
Anyway so the original intent was to play this out as a series of tabletop battles, but the 'rona put a stop to all that for the time being. We'll probably end up doing some follow-up tabletop based fun though, so we're all making minis of our characters. This is my guy, Garrick Hagar:
Basically he's an underhive scum and brawler type, mostly on the right side of the law, and usually makes a few credits as an escort for trade caravans and whatnot. The twist is that Garrick has latent psychic powers, the full potential of which he was unaware of (or unwilling to think about) until he got wrapped up in the mysteries of Spero Secundus.
The mini is a slightly converted underhive scum from 90s Necromunda, as it just fit exactly what I had in mind. I did a weapon swap to bring it in line with what Garrick carries, and slapped some paint on it. Since putting this mini together though, the party have gone through a number of important changes and level ups, and Garrick doesn't look quite the same! An encounter with a sump witch has allowed his full psychic potential to be unlocked, and the money the party made from harvesting giant spider eyes on that adventure allowed us all to invest in some very cool gear for the final mission. The upshot of this is that I'll be converting and painting an upgraded version of Garrick soon enough!

How are you using miniature in a ZOOM game!?
ReplyDeleteI finally got a game of Wrath & Glory going (the only thing close to approaching any sort of silver lining to this Coivd Cloud!?). It is fantastic as I'm actually playing with friends who have moved away and I haven't played games with in AGES! Decades - in a few cases.
The one major drag is: NO MINIATURES. I LOVE miniatures and have always used them in every role-playing game I've ever ran. It was the lead Ral Partha miniatures I saw in the toy shop that drew me into playing D&D oh so many years ago...
I considered painting up miniatures for all the characters anyway, taking pictures of them, and using those pictures as tokens in Roll20 - which we've used for maps...
Sadly we aren't actually using the minis in game! Alex has been drawing us a lot of awesome maps and illustrations to fire the imagination though. The plan was originally for us to do this as a series of linked tabletop games, but COVID kinda changed the landscape there! We're all doing an interpretation of our characters in model form though, for when things do return to normal (and Alex is apparently populating the rest of the planet with his staggering hobby output!).

ReplyDeleteAnd thank you! I know what you mean btw, the minis are always what sells it for me. I'm enjoying the RP/mystery/problem solving, but the minis are what it's all about!
DeleteHaven't done any roleplaying for years but I also converted a model for my cyberpunk solo character. It definitely adds depth to the immersion.

DeleteA good reason is half the battle :) He's in my pile of shame as we speak, btw. I really dig how the old scum minis each share some of the look of the main gangs. I like to think this guy told Van Saar to stick it cause he wanted to grow a cool pointy beard and sport a bandana!
